Never change prescribed treatment because of a supplement
If a doctor has prescribed medication — for diabetes, blood pressure, a heart condition, the prostate, thyroid, blood thinning or anything else — continue taking it exactly as directed. Do not reduce it, do not stop it, and do not delay a dose because you have started a supplement. Only your own clinician can change your treatment, and any seller who suggests otherwise is putting you at risk.
Check interactions before you start
Interactions between supplements and prescribed medicines are real. Potassium with ACE inhibitors, ARBs and potassium-sparing diuretics. Glucosamine, chondroitin and curcumin with anticoagulants. Fenugreek with glucose-lowering medication. Epimedium with nitrates. Any pharmacist at any licensed Kenyan pharmacy will check a supplement label against your medication in a minute, at no cost.
Not suitable for everyone
The products listed here are for adults. They are not intended for anyone under 18. Several are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and several are intended for men only. Individual product pages state the restrictions the supplier publishes; where a restriction is not published, treat the general limits above as applying.
When to see a clinician instead of ordering
Seek medical assessment promptly, and do not use a supplement as a substitute, for any of the following:
- Blood in urine, stool or semen
- Inability to pass urine — this is an emergency
- Chest pain, breathlessness at rest, or sudden severe headache
- A joint that is hot, red, swollen and painful, or joint pain with fever
- Back pain with numbness, leg weakness, or changes in bladder or bowel control
- Unexplained weight loss, prolonged fever, or persistent severe abdominal pain
- Any symptom that is new, worsening or frightening you

Regulatory context in Kenya
Medicines in Kenya are regulated by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board. Product standards and labelling fall under the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). A food supplement legally on sale has met food safety and labelling requirements; it has not been assessed for whether it works. Reporting a problem
If a product causes an adverse reaction, stop taking it, see a clinician and keep the pack. Suspected unsafe or falsely labelled products can be reported to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board or the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
