Collagen
The main structural protein of cartilage, tendon, skin and bone.
Role in a formula: Structural protein used in joint, skin and connective tissue formulas.
What collagen is
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and the main structural component of cartilage, tendons, ligaments, skin and the organic part of bone. Think of it as the scaffolding that gives connective tissue its tensile strength — without it, tissue has nothing to hold its shape against load.
The body makes its own collagen continuously, using amino acids from dietary protein plus vitamin C as an essential cofactor. Production slows gradually from around the mid-twenties, which is the biological fact behind most collagen marketing.
What a collagen supplement actually supplies
Supplemental collagen is usually hydrolysed, meaning broken into short peptides that survive digestion better than whole protein. Once absorbed, those peptides are amino acid building blocks — the body does not route swallowed knee collagen to your knee. The proposed mechanism is that the peptides both supply raw material and act as a signal that stimulates the body's own collagen synthesis.
Type II collagen is the form found in cartilage specifically, which is why joint formulas often specify it. That distinction is real and worth checking on a label.
Getting the most from it
Vitamin C is required for collagen synthesis. A collagen supplement taken by someone with a very low vitamin C intake is working against a bottleneck; fruit and vegetables solve that cheaply.
Adequate total protein matters too. And the strongest signal for connective tissue adaptation is mechanical load — controlled, progressive movement. Collagen plus a walking or strength habit is a sensible pairing; collagen alone is doing half the job.

Collagen — questions
Does collagen from a capsule reach my knees?
Not directly. Collagen is digested into peptides and amino acids, which the body then uses wherever it is building tissue. The supplement supplies raw material and, according to the proposed mechanism, a signal — it does not deliver collagen to a specific joint.
Can I get collagen from food?
Yes. Bone broth, slow-cooked meat on the bone, and skin-on cuts are traditional dietary sources. Adequate protein overall plus vitamin C supports your own collagen production.
