Lycopene
The red carotenoid from tomatoes, common in men's health formulas.
Role in a formula: Carotenoid antioxidant frequently used in men's health formulas.
What lycopene is
Lycopene is the carotenoid pigment that makes tomatoes, watermelon, pink guava and papaya red. Unlike beta-carotene it is not converted into vitamin A in the body; it functions as an antioxidant in its own right, and it concentrates in certain tissues, including the prostate — which is the reason it became a fixture of men's health formulas.
Dietary lycopene is more available from cooked and processed tomato than from raw. Tomato paste, cooked stew and sauces release far more of it than a raw slice, and a little oil in the cooking improves absorption further, since lycopene is fat-soluble.
Why supplements include it
Observational research has repeatedly noted associations between diets high in tomato products and prostate health outcomes. Association is not proof of effect, and supplement trials have been less consistent than the dietary observations, but the rationale is coherent enough that lycopene appears in most serious men's health formulas.
A supplement is a convenient way to get a consistent amount. It is not better than a diet with regular cooked tomato in it, and in Kenya that is an inexpensive and widely available food.

Lycopene — questions
How much lycopene is in a tomato?
It varies with ripeness and variety, and cooked tomato products deliver considerably more available lycopene than raw. Regular cooked tomato in stews and sauces is a practical dietary source.
Does lycopene prevent prostate problems?
No supplement ingredient prevents a medical condition, and it should not be described that way. Lycopene is included in men's health formulas as an antioxidant that concentrates in prostate tissue.
