Green Tea Extract — Camellia sinensis
A polyphenol-rich extract used across wellness formulas for antioxidant support.
Role in a formula: Polyphenol source used for general antioxidant support.
What green tea extract is
Green tea extract is a concentrated preparation from the leaves of Camellia sinensis — the same plant that Kenya grows on a large scale in Kericho, Nandi and Kiambu, though Kenyan production is predominantly black tea. The difference between green and black tea is processing: green tea leaves are heated soon after picking to prevent oxidation, which preserves the catechin polyphenols that would otherwise be converted.
Those catechins, particularly epigallocatechin gallate, are the compounds supplement formulators are interested in. An extract concentrates them well beyond what a cup of brewed tea provides.
Why formulas include it
Green tea polyphenols are among the most studied plant antioxidants, and they turn up in wellness formulas across almost every category — men's health, metabolic support, weight management and general vitality. In a prostate formula, the rationale offered is antioxidant support for tissue; in a slimming formula, the caffeine and catechin combination.
The realistic framing is that green tea extract is a well-tolerated source of dietary polyphenols. It is not a treatment for anything, and the strongest health claims made for it in marketing go well beyond what the evidence supports.
Caffeine and other practical notes
Green tea extract usually contains caffeine unless it has been specifically decaffeinated. If you are sensitive to caffeine, take it earlier in the day, and count it alongside your coffee and tea intake rather than on top of it as if it were free.
Very high-dose green tea extract supplements have been associated with liver problems in rare case reports, which is a reason to stick to the dose on the pack rather than doubling up, and a reason to stop and seek advice if you notice unusual fatigue, dark urine or yellowing of the eyes.

Green Tea Extract — questions
Is green tea extract the same as drinking tea?
No. An extract concentrates the polyphenols well beyond a brewed cup, and the caffeine content differs too. Drinking tea is a food habit; taking an extract is taking a supplement, with the dose limits that implies.
Does green tea extract burn fat?
It is commonly included in weight management formulas, but no ingredient burns fat on its own. Weight change follows from sustained energy balance. Treat any ingredient claim framed as fat burning with scepticism.
