Saw Palmetto — Serenoa repens

What saw palmetto is

Saw palmetto is a small fan palm native to the south-eastern United States. The part used in supplements is the ripe berry, from which a lipid-rich extract is drawn. Native American communities used the berries as food and as a remedy for urinary complaints long before the plant entered European herbal practice in the nineteenth century, and it has been a fixture of men's health formulas ever since.

The extract is characterised by its fatty acid and phytosterol content. Those compounds are the reason a lipid extract is used rather than dried powdered berry — the constituents of interest are not water-soluble.

Why it appears in prostate supplements

Saw palmetto is the single most commonly used botanical in men's urinary and prostate supplements worldwide. It has been studied in that context for decades, with results that are genuinely mixed: some trials report improvement in urinary symptom scores, others find no difference from placebo. That is an honest summary, and it is more useful than a marketing claim in either direction.

What can be said without overstating anything is that it is a well-characterised, widely used botanical with a long tradition of use in this area, which is why formulators reach for it. It is not a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, and a supplement containing it is not a substitute for a urology assessment.

Practical notes

Saw palmetto is generally well tolerated. The most commonly reported effects are mild digestive ones, usually reduced by taking it with food. It is not intended for women, and it is not intended for anyone under 18.

If you are taking anticoagulant medication or are scheduled for surgery, mention any saw palmetto supplement to your doctor. And do not use a supplement to postpone investigation of urinary symptoms that are worsening — that is where real harm happens.

Saw Palmetto — questions

Does saw palmetto shrink the prostate?

No supplement should be described that way. Saw palmetto is used in formulas positioned as support for normal prostate and urinary function. Prostate enlargement is a clinical finding that a doctor assesses and manages.

How long does saw palmetto take to work?

Herbal formulas containing saw palmetto are typically taken as a course over weeks rather than days. Follow the schedule printed on the pack of the product you buy.
