Calcium
The mineral of bone, also required for muscle contraction and vessel tone.
Role in a formula: Essential mineral for bone, muscle contraction and vascular function.
More than bone
About 99% of the body's calcium is in bone and teeth, which is what everyone knows. The remaining one percent does work that is arguably more immediately critical: it triggers muscle contraction, including the heartbeat, participates in nerve signalling, and is required for blood clotting and for the tone of blood vessel walls.
Because that one percent is non-negotiable, the body maintains blood calcium within a narrow range and will draw on bone to do it. Long-term low intake therefore shows up as weakened bone rather than as a blood test abnormality.
Absorption depends on vitamin D
Calcium absorption from the gut requires vitamin D. Taking calcium without adequate vitamin D status limits how much is actually absorbed, which is why the two are so often formulated together.
Kenya's equatorial sunlight makes vitamin D deficiency less common than in temperate countries, but it is not absent — indoor work, covering clothing and darker skin all reduce synthesis.
Sources and cautions
Milk, mala and other fermented dairy, small fish eaten with the bones such as omena, dark leafy greens and sesame are practical Kenyan sources. Omena in particular is an inexpensive and unusually rich one.
Very high supplemental calcium intake is not benign — it has been associated with kidney stones and, in some research, with cardiovascular concerns. Food sources first, supplements to fill a genuine gap, is the sensible order.

Calcium — questions
Do I need calcium supplements if I drink milk?
If your diet regularly includes dairy, omena, leafy greens or sesame, you may already meet your needs. Supplements are for filling a gap, not for adding on top of an adequate intake.
Should calcium be taken with food?
Calcium carbonate needs stomach acid and is best taken with a meal. Calcium citrate is absorbed adequately either way.
