L-Carnitine
A compound that shuttles fatty acids into cells to be used for energy.
Role in a formula: Used in energy metabolism and cardiovascular support formulas.
What L-carnitine does
L-carnitine is a compound the body makes from the amino acids lysine and methionine, and it has one central job: transporting long-chain fatty acids across the mitochondrial membrane so they can be burned for energy. Without it, fat cannot be used as fuel inside the cell.
Tissues with high energy demand hold the most — skeletal muscle and heart muscle above all, which is why L-carnitine appears in both sports and cardiovascular formulas.
Why it is in cardiovascular and energy products
The heart is the most metabolically active muscle in the body and relies heavily on fatty acid oxidation. That mechanistic fact is the basis for including carnitine in heart-support formulas, and there is a body of clinical research examining it in cardiac contexts, with mixed but not uninteresting results.
In weight management marketing the logic is usually presented as "carnitine burns fat". That overstates it considerably. Carnitine enables fat transport; it does not create the energy deficit that causes fat loss. In people who are not deficient, supplementing rarely changes body composition on its own.
Sources and practical notes
Red meat is by far the richest dietary source — the name comes from the Latin for flesh. Omnivores generally make and consume enough; vegetarians and vegans have lower intakes, though the body compensates by making more.
It is generally well tolerated; high doses can cause digestive upset and a distinctive body odour. People with hypothyroidism or seizure disorders should ask a doctor first.

L-Carnitine — questions
Does L-carnitine burn fat?
It enables fatty acids to enter mitochondria to be burned, but it does not create the energy deficit that produces fat loss. Marketing that describes it as a fat burner is overstating a transport function.
Do vegetarians need L-carnitine?
Vegetarians and vegans have lower dietary intake, but the body increases its own synthesis and retention. Deficiency in healthy people on a plant-based diet is uncommon.
