A culinary seed used in men's vitality and metabolic formulas.
Role in a formula: Seed extract used in vitality and metabolic support formulas.
Fenugreek is an annual legume whose aromatic seeds are a kitchen staple from India through the Middle East to the Horn of Africa. In Kenya the seeds are familiar as a spice and, in some communities, as a traditional preparation for nursing mothers. Their smell — maple-like, distinctive — comes from a compound called sotolon that also famously passes into sweat and urine at higher intakes.
Supplement fenugreek is usually a standardised seed extract, often concentrated for saponin content.
Two uses dominate. In men's vitality formulas, fenugreek extract is included on the basis of small trials reporting effects on self-reported sexual function and vitality scores. In metabolic formulas, it is included for its soluble fibre and saponin content, with some research on post-meal glucose.
Both bodies of evidence are small-scale. Fenugreek is a food with a long safety history, which is the honest strength of the case for including it; the outcome claims should be read as preliminary rather than established.
Fenugreek is a legume and can cross-react in people with peanut or chickpea allergy. It may lower blood glucose, so people taking diabetes medication should raise it with their doctor before adding it. It is not recommended in pregnancy, as it has traditional use as a uterine stimulant.

Sotolon, the compound responsible for fenugreek's maple-like aroma, is excreted in sweat and urine. It is harmless and it goes away when you stop taking it.
Ask your doctor first. Fenugreek may affect blood glucose, and combining it with glucose-lowering medication without supervision is not sensible.
