Siberian Ginseng — Eleutherococcus senticosus

Not actually ginseng

Siberian ginseng, properly called eleuthero, is a thorny shrub from north-eastern Asia. Despite the common name it is not botanically ginseng — Panax ginseng is a different genus with different active compounds. The naming is a historical marketing artefact, and it causes genuine confusion, so it is worth stating plainly.

The part used is the root, and the compounds of interest are called eleutherosides.

The adaptogen idea

Eleuthero is the plant that gave rise to the modern concept of an adaptogen — a substance proposed to help the body cope with physical and mental stress in a non-specific way. It was studied extensively in the Soviet Union from the 1950s, particularly in athletes and workers under demanding conditions.

Much of that early research does not meet current methodological standards, and Western trials since have been mixed. The reasonable summary is that eleuthero is a traditionally used tonic root with a plausible framing and inconclusive modern evidence. It is included in vitality formulas for stamina and general resilience support, not as a treatment for fatigue.

Practical notes

Eleuthero can be mildly stimulating and is best taken earlier in the day if it affects your sleep. It may interact with blood pressure medication and with digoxin, so raise it with your doctor if you take either. It is not recommended in pregnancy.

Siberian Ginseng — questions

Is Siberian ginseng the same as Korean ginseng?

No. They are different plants from different genera with different active compounds. Siberian ginseng is Eleutherococcus senticosus; Korean or Asian ginseng is Panax ginseng.

Does eleuthero cause sleeplessness?

Some people find it mildly stimulating. If that is you, take it in the morning rather than the evening.
